Innovation

Everyone wants to know how to “think outside the box,” to come up with something truly unique and to not get left behind. We hear a lot about “disruption” and businesses wonder how they can avoid it, or better yet, be it. As Design Lead at Singularity University, I co-led Design Thinking workshops for world-wide companies like InBev, NEC, & Lockheed Martin, focusing on how exponential tech like AI and robotics can tackle global challenges and influence new products. I worked alongside CEOs and innovation labs to create high-impact visual stories—from concept art and prototyping to graphic novels—all of which helped them redefine their market potential. Additionally I mentor startup founders on building an "innovation mindset" and continue to facilitate ideation workshops globally.

Nuclear innovation bootcamp 2025Innovation Mindset Lecturer & Ideation Facilitator

I was invited to Sydney to lecture and facilitate at the 8th Nuclear Innovation Bootcamp, hosted by UNSW. The program brought together an international group of leaders in science, policy, and engineering to tackle "Global Impact" through nuclear energy and climate solutions.

I introduced the cohort to “The Innovation Mindset and Design Thinking,” providing them with practical tools to solve complex, high-stakes problems. Over two days of hands-on sessions, I helped teams move beyond technical data to create human-centered solutions through brainstorming, testing, and reframing challenges. It was a great reminder of how design-led thinking can act as a catalyst for real change in the energy sector.

Singularity University — Graphic Novels for innovation strategy & implementation

At Singularity University, I used a framework called Science Fiction Design Intelligence (SciFiDI) to help organizations look 15 years into the future. By moving past short-term hurdles, we helped teams figure out what they need to build today to stay relevant in a rapidly changing world.

I worked on four SciFiDI graphic novels that turned complex ideas into strategic stories. These projects explored everything from blockchain and defense scenarios to the future of education and climate-adaptive living. My role involved leading workshops, developing concepts, and assembling the final books to show how tech like AI, robotics, and digital biology could tackle massive challenges in health, energy, and food.

While much of this work is under NDA, you can see my contributions in the public release of NEPI, a graphic novel by Singularity University. I specifically designed the mycelium shelter and the exo-suit advertisement, handled the lettering, and helped bring the ideation workshop results to life.

HUBVERY — DRONE DELIVERY IDEATION

During my time at Singularity University, I was honored to mentor a brilliant young entrepreneur during one of our Global Startup Programs. He told me, I assumed as a joke, that he intended to name his first delivery drone after me. A few years later, I was delighted to find he had!

His recommendation of our work together was so kind and comprehensive, that I offer it here:

  • "Without hesitation, I extend my highest recommendation for Imogen Speer.

“Throughout our collaboration, Imogen's exceptional talent and unwavering dedication were nothing short of awe-inspiring, leaving an indelible mark on my memory.

“As Cofounder and CEO at Emerging Rule, GENIA Latinoamérica, and HUBVERY, which operate in the AI industry, I had the pleasure of witnessing Imogen's exceptional cross-disciplinary work.

“From ideation and workshop facilitation to design thinking strategies and concept design, Imogen's expertise has been invaluable to many entrepreneurs. For example, when in need of support with HUBVERY’s concept design and pitch decks, I turned to Imogen for her exceptional skills in art direction, graphic recording, and mentoring, recognizing her ability to synthesize ideas effectively through a design lens.

“Imogen's professional demeanor and unwavering commitment were evident throughout our collaboration. She brought a fresh perspective and innovative solutions to our project, significantly elevating its quality and impact.

“What truly distinguishes Imogen is her unique ability to envision innovative solutions through a creative lens. Her adeptness in design thinking sets her apart from other contractors and adds immense value to any team she joins.

“Beyond her exceptional skills, Imogen's positive attitude and collaborative approach made our working relationship both productive and enjoyable. Her commitment to exceeding expectations ensured the success of our project and contributed to our dynamic culture of growth.

“In summary, Imogen's exceptional talents, professionalism, and collaborative spirit make her an invaluable asset to any team. I wholeheartedly recommend her for any endeavor she pursues."
